About the artwork

oil on 14x14 cradled wood panel

My pieces are crafted using thousands of oil paint pixels. Each pixel is delicately placed on a wood panel using a flathead screwdriver. Through this unconventional technique, I imbue a distinct texture that invites viewers to explore the intricate details of each piece.

Drawing inspiration from my background in web development, I created a custom application to not only streamline my process, but also serve as a testament to the symbiotic relationship between the digital and the organic world. I'm inspired by the endless possibilities that emerge at the intersection of technology and art.

I do a lot of preprocessing in Lightroom and Photoshop. I then take that photo and feed it into my application which extracts all of the unique hex codes, their x, y coordinates, and the number of times they occur in a given range of rows. After that I premix all of my colors. It's been difficult trying to balance the amount I mix with how much I think I'll be able to work on it before the texture of the paint starts to degrade. If I mix too little, I can potentially spend hours remixing colors unnecessarily. If I mix too much, it's wasteful. Once I'm happy with the colors I use a table that my app generates and just work left to right, top to bottom. On average I can do between 100-200 pixels an hour.

With this piece, "Eclipses are a reminder, or even a warning, that nothing lasts forever. Even something as mighty and steadfast as the sun, something that is fuel for life on Earth, will eventually be snuffed out. I also like to think of eclipses as an underdog story."
